C 10 — Who Moved My Cheese?
Brushing aside my temptations to review a classical literature book or a popular book that would make me seem modern and up to date, here I have decided to express my views on a book that has successfully carved a niche in my heart. The book that I am reviewing is named ‘Who moved my cheese?’ written by Spencer Johnson as a parable.
The story revolves around the lives of 2 mice and 2 humans, namely- Sniff, Scurry, Haw and Hem. These characters are entirely dependent on a big piece of cheese for their survival. The humans are so content with their piece of cheese that they do not notice it getting unusually smaller day by day. However, the mice notice it and take timely steps to find alternative places of cheese. One day, the entire piece of cheese got moved away. The mice had found an another source of cheese by then, but the humans kept whining about their misfortune. The mice believe that ‘The Quicker You Let Go Of Old Cheese, The Sooner You Can Enjoy New Cheese’
The story carries a deep metaphor about human habits. We lack the impetus to look for other brighter options as we become too satisfied with the one safe option we have. And instead of learning lessons from our losses, we keep crying over our fate. It teaches us to be vigilant and adapt change whole heartedly. “If you do not change, you can become extinct.” This book is highly read by employees of business enterprises to boost up their work efficiency.
The author has tried to metaphorically convey the message in the book, though the lesson had become quite obvious for the readers. I myself wouldn’t re-read this book, like the other classics, but I would definitely suggest everyone to give it a read once as it brought into light a very novel takeaway.
